This spice is a popular one and if you like Latin food, you likely have had it without realizing it. It gives a unique flavor and color. The problem is, this popular blend is filled with MSG, Yellow 5 and Red 40. I particularly don’t like Yellow 5 so I knew I had to find an alternative. I use this in many dishes from Arroz con pollo, Colombian potatoes, chicken soup and tacos, getting the right mix is important.
You are going to want to get yourself an air tight spice jar. They often sell plastic containers for this purpose where you find those mexican seasonings that are sold in the bag. After you have these ingredients combined, use approx 1 teaspoon to equal one packet but because this is your own blend, it’s better to use according to your taste and not how many packets you need.
- 1 Tablespoon ground coriander
- 1 Tablespoon ground cumin
- 1 Tablespoon ground annatto or paprika
- 1 Tablespoon garlic salt
- 1 Tablespoon dried cilangro
- Combine and mix well. Store in an air tight container.
